Long Range Planning



T.C.A. § 13-3-101(i): The Planning Commission is composed of not less than five but not more than fifteen members. The number of members on the committee is determined by the county legislative body. All members are appointed by the county executive subject to confirmation by the county legislative body.

Any vacancy in the membership of such planning commission shall be filled through the appointment of the county executive subject to confirmation by the county legislative body. Historically, the planning commission includes the county executive, the state planner serving Greene County, the county zoning officer, two county commissioners, and four members of the community who are residents of Greene County.



Duties of the planning commission include consideration and approval of plats and subdivisions, adopts regulations of government and subdivision of land within its jurisdiction and provides for the harmonious development of the region, for the coordination of roads within the subdivided land, provides for accurate open spaces for traffic lights and recreation, for the conservation of or production of adequate transportation, water drainage and sanitary facilities, for the ordinance of population congestion, for the ordinance of such scattered or premature subdivisions of land as would involve danger or injury to health, safety or prosperity by reason of lack of water supply, drainage, transportation or other public services or would necessitate an excess of expenditure of public funds for the supply of such services. Also, the planning commission may establish such regulations or requirements as is necessary as to the extent to which and in the manner of which roads shall be graded and improved, and water and sewer and other utility mains, piping, connections of other facilities shall be installed at the condition precedent to the approval of the plat. The commission also operates as the zoning board as it relates to the enforcement of the applicable county zoning ordinances as well as serving as an advisory role for proposed modifications to the county zoning ordinance.
